Should you rent a car in Jamaica, or book a private driver from the airport?

Book the private driver. On a week-long trip from the US or Canada, a rental car means jet lag, the left side of a narrow coast road, a card hold at the airport desk, and one person in the party who cannot drink at Rick’s or the lagoon. The counter is after a long flight, with a line, a deposit on the card, and a map you will not enjoy reading in the first hour. Jamaica drives on the left. Roundabouts, minibuses, and resort gates are ordinary for us and new for most guests from Miami, New York, or Toronto. Villa pins and Airbnb lanes are worse after dark, when the sign you were sent is a mango tree.

All-inclusive weeks make this sharper. The car sits in the lot while you are on the property, then becomes a job the morning you want Dunn’s River or a night at Luminous Lagoon. Someone has to stay fit to drive back. That person is usually the one who booked the trip.
