Landed at Norman Manley (KIN)? A calm first-hour guide to Kingston

Norman Manley International (KIN) sits on the Palisadoes spit, with Kingston Harbour on one side and the reef on the other. A lot of US and Canadian visitors still think every Jamaica holiday begins at Sangster. Plenty of them — especially people visiting family in the corporate area, Portmore, or the hills — land here. The terminal is smaller. The curb still has opinions about your bags.

This is the sequence we walk guests through: what to finish before you land, what to do in the hall, and how to reach a private van booked in your name. Before you land: the C5

Every arriving passenger needs a completed electronic C5 passenger declaration. It is free, on enterjamaica.gov.jm, and it is not optional. Do it on wifi in Miami or Toronto, not in the immigration line. Children need one too. Have the confirmation ready with your passport. Officers still ask the usual questions: where you are staying, how long, return date. A family home, a hotel, or an Airbnb all work. If we are meeting you, it is enough to say you have a pre-booked private transfer.

Bags, SIM, and the first US dollar

Bags come out after immigration. If yours is slow, text the flight number — a good operator would rather wait than have you hunting a new ride. Digicel and Flow sell tourist SIMs; many American and Canadian phones work once the handset is unlocked. Official wifi is usually enough for one “we landed” message.

ATMs exist. A modest JMD withdrawal helps for water, a patty, and a SIM. You do not need to change a large amount at the booth. Tours and private transfers quote in USD. Save Jamaican dollars for cookshops and small shops.

The curb, and how long into town

Walk to the name sign. KIN’s arrivals area is compact; that does not make walk-up offers cheaper or safer. Shared rides add stops in a city that already has traffic. New Kingston hotels are often 30–45 minutes depending on the hour and the causeway. Portmore, Stony Hill, and the airport-adjacent hotels vary. Night rain on the Palisadoes is slow. Named hotels on our Kingston list are a known fare for 1–3 plus extras. A cousin’s house in Portmore is a pin and a quote. Both are normal. Neither should be negotiated with jet lag at midnight.

If Kingston is the holiday, not only the airport

Sleep first. Then Hope Road, Devon House, Port Royal and Hellshire, or an early Blue Mountains coffee morning. Those days start in the capital — they are not add-ons you squeeze after a 4 p.m. landing. If the family is on the north coast and you only used KIN because the fare was cheaper, say so: the island taxi to Montego Bay is a real crossing, priced as such, not a “quick hop.”

How to book the pickup

Send date, flight number, headcount, and the drop — hotel name or a pin. You will get a USD total. A 20% Cash App or PayPal part-payment holds the date after you accept it. Text, iMessage, or either WhatsApp desk. If you also need the return to KIN at the end of the week, book that now. Saturday departure banks fill.
