Coming home: a Jamaica vacation with family from the US or Canada

This is not only a resort week. It is grandparents, children, a parish name, and a suitcase that should go home smelling like pimento. Here is how to move a whole family through Jamaica without the week turning into logistics.

A raftsman poling a bamboo raft on the Martha Brae River in Trelawny

A large share of the people who fly Atlanta–MBJ or Toronto–KIN are not discovering Jamaica on a brochure. They are coming home, or bringing children to an island the adults never stopped calling home. The searches look like tourist searches — “airport transfer Montego Bay,” “things to do with kids,” “where to buy rum cake” — but the week is different. There is a church, a district, a grave, an aunt who still lives in the original house, and a grocery list for the people who could not take the week off.

MG Adventure Tours runs that week the same way we run a honeymoon transfer: private vehicle, USD for the headcount, name sign at Sangster or Norman Manley, text and iMessage next to WhatsApp. The Hiace holds up to 10. That is the difference between a family reunion and a convoy of taxis.

Which airport, and who is sleeping where

Sangster (MBJ) is the north-coast door: Montego Bay, Rose Hall, Falmouth, Negril, Ocho Rios. Norman Manley (KIN) is the capital door: New Kingston, Portmore, the hills, Port Royal, the Blue Mountains. If the family land is in St. Thomas, St. Mary, or Kingston, KIN is kinder. If the week is a villa in Montego Bay plus one parish drive, MBJ is enough.

All-inclusives are easy with small children: the buffet is already paid, the beach is a walk, and you book one outing every other day. A villa is how three generations sit at one table at night. Villas and Airbnbs need a pin, a gate code, and a host number — send those before the flight. Night arrivals in the hills above town are why people book a driver who already has the pin, not a curb hustle.

The first day is not Dunn’s River

Jet lag plus a waterfall climb plus a family argument about who sits where is how someone cries before sunset. Doctor’s Cave, a hotel beach, a cookshop, and sleep. Save Dunn’s River, Blue Hole, and Negril for a day when the children have already met the water. Martha Brae rafting is the outing grandparents and small kids usually like better than a wet rock climb.

If the point of the week is a parish — a church anniversary, a graveside, the old shop — put that in the middle of the week, not the arrival afternoon. Send the district name and a WhatsApp pin. Jamaica is small on a map and slow on a road. A private van means the cousins in the back can sleep.

What the children should see besides the pool

Hope Road if you are in Kingston. Nine Mile if you are on the north coast and the music is the family religion. A Blue Mountain morning if the kids can handle a winding road and a jacket. Hellshire fish if they will eat with their hands. YS Falls if you want water without the Dunn’s River crowd. None of these require a 40-seat coach.

Nightlife is optional and adult. Pier One and the New Kingston rum bars are private-car nights. The teenagers can come if that is your family; the van still waits. We do not leave anyone hunting a taxi at 1 a.m. in a parish they do not know.

The suitcase that goes back to Queens, Brampton, or Miramar

This is where diaspora weeks look different from a honeymoon. The last supermarket run is the trip: Walkerswood, pimento, pepper sauce, coffee, rum cake, a bottle for the uncle who asked. Read the gifts guide and the spice guide on this page. Do not promise ten households a case of rum; US and Canadian allowances are personal, not a freight service.

If elders want to visit a market and you want someone who will wait with the bags, that is around-town hourly time. It is a normal booking. It is not a “tour.”

How to quote a week instead of a single ride

Send the flights (MBJ or KIN), the villa or resort name, the parish stop if you have one, the outing days you already know, and the headcount including children. You will get USD numbers for the pieces we can price, and a quote for the rest. 1–3 guests share listed fares; extras add the per-person amount, up to 10. A 20% Cash App or PayPal part-payment holds each date after you accept the totals.

Text, iMessage, or either WhatsApp desk. You do not have to live on WhatsApp to book this — that is why the SMS button sits next to it. Peak Christmas, Easter, and Independence weeks go first. Hold the airport pickup before you hold the waterfall.
