Landed at Sangster International Airport (MBJ)? A calm first-hour guide

Most US and Canadian holidays in Jamaica begin at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay. The building is compact. The line is the part that varies. If two wide-bodies land together, immigration can take twenty minutes or it can take ninety. That is normal. Your driver should already be watching the flight, not the clock on the quote.

This guide is the sequence we walk guests through every week: what to do inside the terminal, what to ignore on the curb, and how to reach a private van that is actually booked in your name.

Immigration, bags, and the arrivals hall

Have your immigration form and passport ready before you leave the jet bridge. Officers ask the usual questions: where you are staying, how long, return date. Hotel, villa, and Airbnb addresses all work. If you are being met, it is enough to say you have a pre-booked private transfer.

Bags come out in the hall beyond immigration. If yours is slow, text the flight number and a photo of the carousel — a good operator would rather wait than have you hunting for a new ride. After customs you step into the public arrivals area. That is where name-sign pickups happen.

SIM cards, ATMs, and the first US dollar

Digicel and Flow both sell tourist SIMs in or just after arrivals. If you only need maps and WhatsApp for a week, a small prepaid pack is plenty. Many American phones work on Jamaican networks once the SIM is in; check that your handset is unlocked before you fly.

ATMs exist airside and landside. They are fine for a modest JMD withdrawal. You do not need to change a large amount of cash at the airport booth. Resorts, tours, and most taxis quote in USD. Save Jamaican dollars for jerk stands, craft markets, and small shops.

The curb: who is actually your driver

Sangster’s curb is busy by design. People will offer help with bags, a “taxi to the hotel,” a better rate than whoever you booked. The cleanest rule: if you pre-booked, walk to the name sign and nowhere else. A private driver with a name sign is not shouting for walk-up fares.

Shared shuttles are cheaper and slower. They wait for other names and make extra hotel stops. If you have kids, late bags, or a villa with a coded gate, private is the difference between a holiday starting and a holiday negotiating.

If your flight is late

Say the flight number when you book. We track MBJ arrivals and shift the van when wheels are down late. You should not pay a second fare because Air Canada sat on the tarmac. If customs is the delay, one text from the hall is enough.

Once you are in the van, drink the water, confirm the hotel gate or Airbnb pin, and let the island do the rest. Montego Bay and Rose Hall are a short hop. Negril, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, and Kingston are longer — and still easier when the driver already knows which entrance you need.
