Jamaican rum: what to drink, what to tour, and what to pack in the suitcase

Guests land at Sangster or walk off a Falmouth gangway and google “best rum in Jamaica.” They mean two jobs: a drink that tastes like the island, and a bottle that will make sense on a kitchen counter in Florida or Ontario. Those are different purchases. The white overproof in a plastic bottle is a Jamaican kitchen tool. The aged pot-still in a gift box is the one you wrap.

Appleton Estate: the tasting day in St. Elizabeth

Appleton Estate has been distilling in the Nassau Valley since the eighteenth century. The visitor tour — the Joy Spence Rum Experience — walks cane, copper, warehouses, and a guided tasting. It is named for Joy Spence, Appleton’s master blender. Typical hours are Tuesday to Saturday, morning into mid-afternoon; it is closed Sunday and Monday, and on some Jamaican public holidays. Confirm before you leave the hotel. Last tours matter. Showing up at 3 p.m. on a Saturday is how people see the gift shop and not the stills.

From Montego Bay this is a south-coast day, often paired with YS Falls if you want water as well as oak. From Kingston it is a long, pretty cross-island run. From a cruise call it only fits if all-aboard is late and you pick one: the estate or a waterfall, not both plus lunch plus shopping. What to actually buy

If you want one serious bottle: an aged Appleton (the 8-year or 12-year expressions are the ones most visitors remember) or another Jamaican pot-still mark with an age statement. If you want the bottle Jamaicans actually cook and toast with, that is Wray & Nephew White Overproof — 63% alcohol, banana-ester nose, not a sipping rum for someone who asked for a rum punch.

Sangster’s rum creams, Tia Maria, and boxed “Jamaica farewell” trio packs are fine gifts. They are also sold cheaper in a supermarket or a wholesale liquor shop than in the first stall after the cruise scanner. Airport duty-free on the way out is convenient when you are already pulling a suitcase; it is not automatically the lowest price.

• One aged sipping rum for the person who hosted Christmas.
• One overproof only if someone in the house already drinks it — it is not a novelty shot.
• Keep bottles in the sealed duty-free bag or well-padded in checked luggage; do not count on a glass bottle surviving a waterfall day in a beach bag.

Overproof, rum punch, and the first night

A rum punch at the Hip Strip is how a lot of first nights in Montego Bay begin. Ask what rum is in it. If the answer is a shrug, you are paying for fruit. A driver who will wait outside Pier One or a New Kingston rum bar is the same rule as any night out: private car, no shared-taxi hunt at 1 a.m.

Families here visiting relatives will be offered overproof in the kitchen. That is hospitality, not a tasting flight. Eat first. The sun at 18° north plus 63% rum is how arrival day goes sideways.

Typical allowances home — then check the official page

Rules change, and your state or province can be stricter than the federal desk. As a starting point, many returning US residents can include alcohol in a personal exemption of about $800, and a direct arrival from Jamaica (a Caribbean Basin beneficiary country) often allows up to two liters if at least one liter is a product of Jamaica. You must be 21. Canada’s typical personal exemption after 48 hours abroad is in Canadian dollars, with a spirits limit around 1.14 litres — the size of many “big” rum bottles sold here. Always read CBP or CBSA before you buy for the whole family reunion.

Declare what you are carrying. Extra bottles are often legal to import with duty; they are a problem when they are a surprise. Cruise passengers: alcohol bought in Jamaica still counts when you re-enter the US or Canada, even if it sat in the cabin safe.

How to put the estate on a real itinerary

Send date, pickup (Montego Bay hotel, Kingston, or a cruise port), all-aboard if you have one, and headcount.
